Welcome to New Zealand, a land of breathtaking landscapes, rich culture, and extraordinary adventures. This exclusive ROAM journey is an exciting and in-depth exploration of New Zealand’s Southern Alps, designed for those seeking meaningful adventure, remote wilderness access, and exceptional landscapes — without sacrificing comfort or flow. From alpine lakes and glacier-fed rivers to high mountain basins and vineyard-lined valleys, the route connects some of the South Island’s most iconic regions with experiences few travelers ever reach.
Beginning in Queenstown, the adventure unfolds through a balance of iconic highlights and lesser-known backcountry terrain. Whitewater rafting, alpine hiking, packrafting, scenic flights, and remote camping are paired with thoughtfully chosen lodges, great food, and moments to slow the pace. Each day builds naturally on the last, moving from vibrant mountain towns into deeper wilderness and back again.
At its heart, this trip is about contrast — action and stillness, challenge and indulgence, connection and solitude. Guided by local experts and shaped by the landscape itself, it offers an immersive New Zealand experience that feels both adventurous and refined, leaving you with a deep sense of place and memories that last long after the journey ends.

Day One – Queenstown
Welcome to Queenstown, set on the shores of Lake Wakatipu and framed by the dramatic peaks of the Southern Alps. On arrival, we’ll meet you at the airport and transfer into town, giving you time to settle in and take in your new surroundings.
This afternoon we head up the Skyline Gondola, climbing above the town for sweeping views across the lake, Cecil Peak, and the jagged skyline of the Remarkables. It’s a powerful first glimpse of the landscapes that define this region and sets the tone for the adventure ahead.
As evening settles in, we make our way to The Sherwood — an eco-designed retreat perched high above the lake. Tonight is all about slowing down after travel, enjoying a beautifully prepared dinner, and easing into the rhythm of New Zealand adventure.
Overnight Queenstown – The Sherwood
Day Two: Raft the Shotover River
This morning we kick things off with an iconic Queenstown experience — rafting the Shotover River. After a short drive into the Skippers Canyon, we launch into one of New Zealand’s most famous whitewater runs. The river carves its way through towering schist walls, narrowing into dramatic rock corridors and delivering a series of exciting rapids along the way.
Back in Queenstown by early afternoon, there’s time to explore at your own pace. Those keen for more adventure can opt to hike the Mt Crichton Loop, a beautiful forest track that winds past waterfalls and historic mining remains. Alternatively, enjoy some downtime in town — lakeside walks, coffee stops, or simply soaking in the alpine atmosphere.
We regroup later for a casual dinner in town — Fergburger is a local institution — before returning to The Sherwood for a relaxed evening overlooking the lake.
Overnight Queenstown – The Sherwood
Day Three: Glenorchy & Glacier Burn Trail
Leaving Queenstown behind, we follow the northern shores of Lake Wakatipu, one of the most scenic drives in the country. The road winds between lake and mountains, leading us into the small settlement of Glenorchy — a gateway to some of New Zealand’s wildest landscapes.
From here, we head into Mt Aspiring National Park for today’s hike. The Glacier Burn Trail offers expansive views up a wide alpine valley, with waterfalls spilling from hanging glaciers high above. This is classic Southern Alps scenery — raw, powerful, and deeply immersive.
For those wanting a gentler option, the Routeburn Track Nature Loop provides an easy yet stunning introduction to this legendary trail network, weaving through ancient forest and along clear, fast-flowing rivers.
This evening, we settle into Kinloch Retreat. Surrounded by mountains and far from city lights, it’s the perfect place to unwind after a day in the wilderness.
Overnight Kinloch Retreat
Rees Valley Heli-Packrafting Experience
Today delivers one of the true highlights of the journey. A scenic helicopter flight lifts us out of Glenorchy and carries us deep into the remote Rees Valley — a vast alpine corridor carved by glaciers and flanked by sharp ridgelines.
Touching down in complete isolation, we prepare our packrafts and begin our journey downstream. The Rees River is clear, cold, and beautifully braided, offering a unique perspective on the landscape as we drift through wide open valleys and narrow river bends. With no roads, no buildings, and no other people, this is wilderness travel at its finest.
After an unforgettable day in the backcountry, we return to Kinloch, arriving back at the lodge with time to relax, share stories, and enjoy another hearty evening meal.
Overnight Kinloch Retreat
Day Five: Arrowtown to Wine Country – e-Bike Tour
This morning we head to Arrowtown, a beautifully preserved gold-mining village rich in history and charm. From here, we begin a relaxed e-bike journey through Central Otago’s renowned wine region.
Cruising along quiet trails and country roads, we pass vineyards, rivers, and rolling hills, stopping at several prominent wineries for tastings along the way. Lunch is enjoyed at one of the region’s standout cellar doors, where local produce and award-winning wines take centre stage.
As the afternoon winds down, we finish at Ayerburn Winery. Tonight’s dinner is set among the vines — a memorable evening of great food, exceptional wine, and views across the valley.
Overnight Queenstown – The Sherwood
Day Six: Wanaka to Makarora. Hike Rocky Mountain Trail
We travel north toward Wanaka today, stopping to hike the Rocky Mountain Trail. This short but rewarding climb delivers panoramic views across Lake Wanaka, the surrounding farmland, and the peaks beyond — one of the best viewpoints in the region.
After time to explore Wanaka township — lakeside strolls, boutique shops, and cafés — we continue through the Haast Pass into Makarora. The landscape shifts dramatically as the mountains close in and the road narrows.
Wonderland Lodge sits beneath towering peaks at the edge of Mt Aspiring National Park. This evening is all about unplugging — birdsong, mountain air, and a peaceful night surrounded by wilderness.
Overnight Wonderland Lodge
Day Seven: Fly Into Siberia Valley – Wilderness Hiking
A spectacular scenic flight launches us deep into the heart of Mt Aspiring National Park. From the air, we take in glaciers, waterfalls, and vast alpine basins before landing in the remote Siberia Valley — accessible only by foot or air.
From here, the day unfolds at your pace. Strong hikers can tackle the challenging route up to Lake Crucible, a high alpine basin surrounded by sheer rock walls and snowfields. Those after a gentler day can hike up the Siberia Valley itself, soaking in big mountain views and pristine river crossings.
Tonight we camp deep in the backcountry. With no roads and no light pollution, this is a rare chance to experience true remoteness under a sky full of stars.
Overnight Remote Wilderness Camp
Day Eight: Hike to Kerin Forks & Wilkin River Jet Boat
This morning we begin our journey out of the valley, following the river flats toward Kerin Forks. The walk is gentle and scenic, offering one last chance to take in the scale and silence of this incredible wilderness.
At Kerin Forks, a jet boat awaits to carry us down the Wilkin River. The ride is fast, fun, and spectacular — weaving through braided channels and deep gorges as we return to Makarora.
From here, we drive back to Queenstown for a final evening together. Tonight is a celebration — reflecting on the adventure, sharing highlights, and enjoying one last night in this iconic alpine town.
Overnight Queenstown – The Sherwood

It’s a breath-taking sight: following the cascading water down to the bottom and out across the Waikato region.
Later, we’ll drive a short distance up the coast to Waihi – a local favourite beach. We’ll walk over the north headland of Waihi Beach to Orokawa Bay – one of THE most beautiful and secluded beaches in New Zealand (or anywhere in the world). There’s a vast array of birdlife to be seen on the way, so keep your eye out! After our hike, we’ll have fish n chips on the beach for dinner – something you have to do if you visit New Zealand!
Overnight Papamoa – Papamoa Beach Chalets
Day Twelve: Kayak Lake Rotoiti & Kaituna River Experience.
We’ll drive a short distance south to Rotorua this morning, making a stop at Okere Falls – the home of the incredible Kaituna River. This gorge is spectacular, epic rapids, stunning native ferns and the ultimate training ground for New Zealand’s best kayakers. Your guide, Sam Sutton, is a 4 times world champion.
After lunch we’ll meet our sea kayak guide, for a full briefing before taking to the water in sea kayaks to paddle across this ancient lake, lined with dense native forest. A short paddle across the lake brings us to the Lake Rotoiti hotpools. This place is out of this world! We’ll be able to soak in glorious hotpools overlooking the lake without the sounds of roads or civilization!
