What to Expect on the Coast & Mountains Multi-Sport

Day One

Today is your arrival day into Puerto Montt, the gateway to Patagonia. Puerto Montt is easily accessed via air from Santiago. Upon arrival a ROAM representative will transfer you to your lake front hotel in nearby Puerto Varas.

We recommend Hotel AWA (or Hotel Cumbres depending on your arrival time). A real game-changer in the Lakes District, the breathtaking Hotel AWA is perched on the shores of Lago Llanguihue and surrounded by national parks and volcanoes. Less than one hour from the Puerto Montt airport, it is the undisputed starting point to explore Patagonia. Those arriving early may wish to challenge the Petrohue River by raft, hike a volcano, fly fish a nearby river, indulge in their spa or take a scenic helicopter ride to see Cochamo, Chile’s uncrowded equivalent of Yosemite.

Day Two

Today we will take you on a scenic 4.5 hour transfer to the Tierra Chiloe lodge located south of Puerto Montt. Alternatively, we bring you back to Puerto Montt for a short flight to Castro, which is 45 minutes from the lodge.

This will be your home base for the next 4 nights. An architectural jaw-dropper inspired by traditional ‘palafitos’ or houses on stilts over the sea, Tierra Chiloé overlooks verdant pastures and wildlife-rich wetlands on the remote, southern island of Chiloé. Navigate the archipelago on boating escapades, uncover UNESCO cultural treasures, cycle or trek through scenic landscapes, bask in the verdant forests and embark on horseback odysseys – returning each day to your luxury base.

Tierra Chiloe
Tierra Chiloe’s forty rooms pay homage to the natural world with a calming palette of local lenga wood. Unwind and disconnect as shifting light and weather patterns dance over the lake and mountains. Combining contemporary furnishings with touches of Patagonia’s culture and history, mindfully designed interiors seamlessly connect with the captivating landscapes beyond.

Days Three, Four & Five

Horseback Riding
Embark on a leisurely horseback journey through the time-honored footpaths of Chiloé’s island villagers, experiencing the essence of traditional life in the archipelago. Departing from our stables, the expedition unfolds along ancient trails, providing a unique perspective of the countryside and observations that only an adventure on horseback can offer. Accompanied by our seasoned horsemen, enjoy an intimate exploration of the island and the hotel’s enchanting surroundings.

Sailing
The archipelago of Chiloé is composed of one large island and several smaller islands and islets. The Pacific Ocean surrounds and carves out this particular geography, creating beaches, pensinsulas, fjords, marshes and bays, leading to a healthy biodiversity for a diverse range of animals, especially migratory birds. Traversing both land and sea with a guide is a fantastic opportunity to understand this ecosystem and vibrant habitat.

Sailing is a part of daily life for the locals of Chiloé. Tierra Chiloé’s wooden yacht, the locally-built and much loved ‘Williche’, allows guests to appreciate the archipelago from the water and travel like a local, making the voyage to and from excursions just as memorable as the destination. Delicious food is prepared and served onboard, including sea urchins and premium Chilean oysters, freshly shucked.

Kayaking or Paddle Boarding Options
Paddle out from the hotel pier on an unforgettable kayak journey to Rilán, spotting birdlife and dolphins on the way. Visit the World Heritage listed church and enjoy a walk through the township. Departing southwards, the water route provides a unique perspective on the Chiloé archipelago, echoing the journeys of Jesuit missionaries who once spread their teachings throughout the islands.

Covering 8 kilometres, the kayak journey leads to Rilán, where its World Heritage listed church and quaint township can be explored on foot. This adventure not only unveils the historical and cultural heritage of the region but also offers an opportunity to appreciate the peninsula’s rich biodiversity. Keep your eyes peeled for the diverse bird species that inhabit the area, and for glimpses of Chilean dolphins gracefully swimming in the surrounding waters. Guests can choose to complete the return journey to Tierra Chiloé by car or kayak.

The protected waters of the bay are ideal for paddle boarding. Soak in the scenic beauty of the surroundings and keep a lookout for various species of birds – residents and migratory, including the Hudsonian Godwit (Limosa haemastica), an emblematic species from Alaska that has chosen Chiloé’s wetlands as one of its regular routes to spend the austral summer.

The inland sea is home to a vast array of marine animals including four kinds of dolphins, sea lions, river and sea otters, and, during certain seasons, whales like orcas and humpbacks.

Biking
Soak in the atmosphere at your own pace as you pedal between the Pacific Ocean and the green forests of Chiloé Island. Guides will assist you in choosing the best route for your interests and activity level.

There are a great variety of trails perfectly suited for exploring the captivating landscape of Chiloé Island on two wheels, from easier routes to rugged terrain for the more experienced rider. Choose an e-bike and cruise along trails through beautiful countryside or opt for a mountain bike to tackle challenging climbs, rewarded with jaw-dropping views of the Pacific Ocean. Observant riders can keep an eye out for wildlife – Chiloé foxes, güiña cats or perhaps even the elusive Pudú – the world’s smallest deer.

Ahuenco Park
Travel to Chepu and enjoy scenic river crossings, passing through the Sunken Forest and trekking through native woods with Pacific Ocean views, with the opportunity for penguin sightings in the summer months.

Chepu stands as a charming town along Chiloé’s largest river, serving as the starting point for the journey to Ahuenco Park. The adventure begins with a boat crossing of the Chepu River, navigating the mystical Sunken Forest before commencing the trek through native woods. Glimpses of the Pacific Ocean provide a stunning backdrop to the exploration.

During the summer months, from October to April, serendipity may grant a unique encounter with Chiloé’s vibrant wildlife. Magellanic and Humboldt penguins, the island’s two main species, favor Ahuenco Park as a nesting site and a safe environment to nurture their young, offering a captivating and rare spectacle.

Day Six

Transfer back to the Airport and Onward to Torres Del Paine
Today we will run you to Castro and take a flight to Puerto Montt for connections to Puerto Natales in southern Chile. Upon arrival in Puerto Natales, we will transfer 1.5 hours to the elegant Tierra Patagonia for your next 4 nights.

Tierra Patagonia
Embraced by a vast sky and framed by the awe-inspiring Torres del Paine Massif, Tierra Patagonia stands as a luxury refuge in one of the wildest places on Earth. The hotel harmonizes seamlessly with its surroundings, overlooking Lake Sarmiento – its design adorned with local lenga wood gracefully curving along the bluff. Within this sanctuary, forty contemporary guest suites await, with panoramic views of the pampas and majestic peaks.

Day Seven

Torres del Paine
With Tierra Patagonia as luxury base, explore all four regions of Torres del Paine National Park and witness soaring, snow-covered granite spires, glaciers calving into turquoise lakes and native wildlife in its natural habitat. Discover the region’s untamed beauty via a wide range of guided excursions on two feet, horseback or take to the water on a thrilling cruise.

Explore the Northeast
The northeast region of the park is simultaneously striking and ethereal. Hiking trails wind through lenga forests and past glacial lakes, guiding you closer to towering summits including the Torres del Paine – three iconic granite spires that are often enveloped in mist.

Central Region
At the centre of the park lies the famous ‘Cuernos’, a collection of majestic granite peaks with distinctive horn-shaped forms, and the renowned French Valley, a land sculpted by glaciers that enchants hikers with sheer cliffs, tumbling waterfalls and sweeping views.

Day Eight

Western Region
The western region of the park is home to Grey Glacier, an immense ice formation with towering ice walls calving into pristine glacial lakes. The region is also reknowned for its ancient lenga forests, their magical canopy of colour changing in step with the seasons.

Day Nine

Southern Region
The southern region of the park is ideal for horseback riding and spotting wildlife in their natural habitat. Discover the magnificent Lago Toro, an immaculate turquoise lake nestled amidst the rugged terrain that reflects the encircling snow-capped mountains.

Day Ten

Transfer back to Puerto Natales and flights home
After breakfast we will take the 1.5 hour shuttle back to the airport in Puerto Natales and onward to either Puerto Montt or Santiago. Shuttles are coordinated to meet departing flights.

Puerto Natales
If you wish to add a night or two in Puerto Natales, we recommend The Singular Patagonia. It’s no secret that it’s expensive but the hotel was named a National Heritage Site in 1996. Built on the premises of the former Bories meat processing plant from the 20th century, they’ve preserved its history and integrated the essence of its surroundings into every detail making it a grand finish to your Patagonian adventure,
