Rio Palena Lodge is your ultimate Patagonian adventure retreat. Set in a pristine Andean valley on the banks of the magnificent Rio Palena river this oasis features an array of angling and adventure offerings to ensure you experience the best of Patagonia’s Los Lagos region.
Rio Palena Lodge’s location in a region famous for large, wild, brown and rainbow trout, is highlighted by the home waters of the Palena; where you can wade or float right out the front door. Add in a myriad of rivers, lakes and streams plus a riverfront outpost on the Rio Futaleufú and you have the most dynamic fly fishing experience in South America. With adventure offerings like whitewater rafting, mountain biking and hiking, your entire group will have options to explore Patagonia in their own way. When you’re not exploring, relax in comfort and style. Rio Palena Lodge features seven en suite bedrooms, each with a stunning river view. Your private chef prepares creative breakfasts each morning, and savory lunches your guide will present riverside each afternoon.
On your return, kick-back on the deck overlooking the tranquil river while sipping a fine Chilean wine or Pisco Sour. Or unwind with a soak or steam in the wood-fired hot tubs and sauna. Heli-Fishing Adventures
Photo: Rio Palena Lodge
• Rio Azul: helicopter to the Rio Azul, a remote alpine river in the Andes with a healthy population of rainbow trout. After a riverside lunch, hop over to the upper Tigre to fish for brook trout.
• Walk & Wade: Rio Tranquillo flows clear and clean into the Palena River just downstream from the lodge. Surrounded by glacier views, fish for rainbows and big browns to your heart’s content. Late summer trips offer salmon fishing as well.
• Lago Rosas Float: a small backcountry lake well off the beaten path, Lago Rosas sees little pressure and is best fished in the morning for both brown and rainbow trout.
• Lower Palena Float: fly down to the rarely fished lower Palena River where the trees are big and the fish are too. At the end of your day we will whisk you back to the lodge.
Heli Adventures

• Los Condores Ridge: gear up with helmets and harnesses for an exciting rope assisted scramble in the high cordillera, where a spine of solid granite extends to the top Mt Gabriel. At the summit we’ll rappel down to our heli pick up.
• Cathedral Blue Lagoon: accessed by heli only, this little gem of a lagoon is hidden high in the mountains and framed by a glacier. Paddle board, swim or hike around this gorgeous tarn that only we can explore.
• Pedro Glacier: perched high up in the Tranquillo Valley, this is a wonderful spot to explore the ice with crampons or go for a cold plunge swim in one of the crystal clear pools below.
• Cathedral Glacier: Ascend high up into the Andes to a remote glacier, where you will land on the banks of a glacial lake. Don one of our drysuits to paddle board across and hike to an emerald ice cave.
