A little more than 50 miles southeast of Belize City lies Lighthouse Reef Atoll. Stretching 30 miles long and 8 miles wide, the atoll offers some of the best adventuring in Belize. The infamous Blue Hole is in the middle of the central lagoon and graces the beautiful Half Moon Caye Natural Monument, the region’s crown jewel and Belize’s first national park. Lighthouse Reef is only accessible by boat charter, and it is where you will spend four memorable Belizean nights. Our basecamp at Half Moon Caye is a protected island managed by the Belize Audubon Society. Once there, you stay in beautiful wall tent cabanas and you’ll have a choice of several guided activities, including special paddling and snorkelling excursions. Participants can visit ‘the Aquarium’, Jacques Cousteau’s legendary Blue Hole, or quietly observe a nesting colony of 4000 red-footed boobies.
The opportunities range from wild to mild while spending our days at Blancaneaux. The resort offers daily hikes of varying lengths to waterfalls, ruins or even following jaguar tracks. You can choose to horseback ride, go on foot or even tube, while marvelling at the orchids, jungle, caves and charismatic bird species. Knowledgeable guides will teach Mayan history and show you medicinal plants. This trip is ideal for families, or traveling companions with mixed abilities and interests.

What to Expect on the Belize – Reef & Mountains Trip
Day Zero:
Arrive in Belize City and transfer to your hotel.
Day One:
Today is your arrival day into Belize. After clearing customs, you can take a shuttle to the Biltmore Plaza Hotel, where you will dine and spend the night.
Day Two:
Today is where the real fun begins. You’ll meet your guide at 8:30 am in the lobby of the Biltmore Plaza Hotel and be escorted you to a boat launch for a motor charter to Lighthouse Reef Atoll. Imagine traveling by sea through mangrove ranges and white sand cayes before traversing Belize’s predominant Barrier Reef. This seafaring journey will take you through the inner lagoons of Turneffe Atoll and 20 miles of open sea before reaching Lighthouse Reef Atoll. Your destination is located at the furthest edge of the Belizean Reef System, 55 miles offshore and offers an experience you’ll never forget.
In ideal weather conditions, this motor charter takes approximately two hours. Upon reaching Half Moon Caye (an island at the southern end of Lighthouse Reef Atoll) your guide team will orient you to your newest island setting. After settling into your accommodations and having lunch in an open-air dining pavilion, you will be taught some key sea kayaking and paddling techniques by your guides. You’ll then head out for your first sea kayaking and snorkeling adventure!
Day Three, Four, & Five:
Half Moon Basecamp
“If there’s a heaven on earth, then this must be it” one guest wrote of Halfmoon Caye. You’ll find empty beaches, a rare bird colony, untouched coral reefs and sleep with breathtaking views of a billion stars stretching over the ocean.
Early risers may want to go for a swim, do some yoga – or just grab a cup of coffee and watch the tropical sunrise. After a healthy Belizean breakfast, everyone gathers to plan the day’s activities. The waters of Lighthouse Reef Atoll are exceptionally clear with a fabulously rich reef system, which offers some of the best kayaking, snorkelling, and diving in the Caribbean. Throughout your stay, you’ll have an opportunity to try a variety of activities as you explore this remote and magical part of Belize.
Snorkelling at the ‘Aquarium’ is often a favourite guest activity. This location has a profusion of tropical fish and towering coral formations uncommon to other locations. You’ll also be taken on another snorkelling excursion to the renowned Blue Hole, made famous by the legendary explorer Jacques Cousteau. The Blue Hole is an underwater cave and sinkhole in the middle of the Lighthouse lagoon. In the mornings and evenings, you can walk to the red-footed booby colony to watch the birds come in from the sea to feed their chicks.
Day Six:
Extension – Tobacco Paradise Caye (4 days/3 nights)
We return to Dangriga around noon for flights back to Belize City.
